Every now and then, I hear from people who are in between jobs or recent graduates just stepping into the workforce. Most of them say something like:
“I need a job. Please give me an opportunity.”
It is an honest and understandable request. But that statement reveals a problem in how we often think about employment.
When employers consider making someone an offer, they are rarely asking, “Does this person need a job?” Instead, they are asking a different question:
“Will this person help us move forward?”
In practical terms, they are thinking:
- Will this person help us create assets?
- Will they solve real problems?
- Will they improve our systems?
- Will they serve our clients better?
- Will they use our resources more wisely?
Every organisation survives and grows by creating value and capturing value in return. So when they are about to bring a new team member on board, they are looking for clear evidence that the person will add value in tangible, measurable ways.
That shift in perspective makes a world of difference.
What if the key to getting hired isn’t sending out more applications but thinking differently? Let's explore a smarter way to build a resilient career in today’s economy. Share on XTwo Simple Ways Anyone Can Create Value
Across industries and roles, most employee contributions come down to two core outcomes:
- Helping the business make money.
- Helping the business save money.
Almost everything else—innovation, efficiency, customer satisfaction, operational excellence—connects to one of these two.
For example:
- Improving customer service can increase repeat sales.
- Reducing waste can cut operational costs.
- Streamlining communication can save time and prevent costly errors.
- Introducing a better tool can improve productivity and output.
You do not need a senior title or decades of experience to influence these outcomes. What you need is awareness, initiative, and a willingness to take responsibility.
If you can show a better way to do something, reduce inefficiency, improve visibility, strengthen client relationships, or help win new opportunities, you are already positioning yourself as someone valuable.
And value attracts opportunity.
Why So Many Jobseekers Feel Stuck
Many people are taught to approach employment as a transaction:
Apply.
Interview.
Get hired.
Repeat.
In the past, that model worked reasonably well. Economies were slower. Career paths were more predictable. Roles were clearly defined.
Today, things are different.
Organisations are leaner. Technology evolves rapidly. Teams collaborate across cities and countries. Roles shift quickly. Automation handles repetitive tasks. Expectations are higher.
Increasingly, companies are not just hiring employees. They are looking for problem-solvers, builders, thinkers, and partners. This is why many capable jobseekers feel stuck. They are trying to enter a value-driven economy with a mindset shaped by an outdated hiring model. Their education may have prepared them to qualify for jobs, but not necessarily to demonstrate value in a visible, practical way.
The good news is this: that gap can be closed.
Most job seekers focus on being selected. The most successful professionals focus on being useful. There’s a big difference. Share on XAn Alternative Path
At The Plenipotent Company, we have spent years reflecting on this challenge. We asked ourselves a simple question:
What if we prepared people not just to get jobs, but to create value consistently?
One of the ways we respond to that question is through TechLeap Academy—a practical capacity development experience designed to help participants transition from job-seeking to value creation.
Digital tools, remote collaboration, and platform-based economies have changed what is possible. Today, a designer in Lagos can support a nonprofit in Kigali, a startup in London, and a university in Toronto within the same month. Geography is no longer the barrier it once was.
The skills you intend to use as an employee—design, communication, analysis, coordination, marketing, technology—can also be deployed independently. The difference lies in orientation.
You can wait for someone to offer you a job and define your responsibilities.
Or you can learn how to actively create value and offer solutions, whether inside an organisation or as an independent practitioner.
We designed TechLeap Academy for professionals who are ready to take responsibility for their growth and create their own opportunities instead of relying solely on job applications.
Participants engage in hands-on learning that focuses on real-world value creation. This includes:
- Building digital solutions such as websites and learning management systems.
- Using technology tools, including AI, to address actual organisational needs.
- Observing and contributing to live projects.
- Learning how to communicate, structure, and deliver solutions professionally.
But the most distinctive part comes afterward.
Rather than moving participants into traditional employment roles, we welcome them into our professional services network as Accredited Operatives.
As an Accredited Operative, you are not hired into a fixed job. Instead, you function as an independent professional within a collaborative ecosystem. You can:
- Work on projects within our network.
- Bring in your own clients.
- Receive mentorship and structured support.
- Build income streams while continuously strengthening your capabilities.
This approach allows you to grow in skill, confidence, and earning capacity at the same time.
Beyond helping people find jobs, we are equipping them to build careers that are resilient, adaptable, solution-oriented, and sustainable.
The skills you hope to use as an employee can also be used independently. The difference is orientation. Are you waiting for permission or are you building solutions? Share on XA More Sustainable Response to Unemployment
If unemployment is to be addressed sustainably, we cannot rely only on organisations hiring more people. That approach has limits.
We must also help individuals develop the mindset and skills required to create value consistently, whether inside an organisation or independently.
The real shift is from dependency to contribution.
From “Please give me a job” to “How can I solve problems and create value?”
That shift changes how employers see you and how clients respond to you. Most importantly, it changes how you see yourself.
If you are currently searching for a job, pause for a moment and ask yourself a different question:
Where can I create value right now, and how can I develop that ability further?
If that question resonates with you and you are interested in exploring an alternative pathway, I invite you to request more information about joining The PlenipotentCo Network as an Accredited Operative through enrolment in TechLeap Academy.
Scholarships are available for the first twelve participants in each cohort.
You can get more details and enrol through the academy page.
Stop waiting to be chosen.
Become someone who creates solutions that people are willing and eager to pay for.
That is a far more powerful and sustainable way to advance your career.
